Château Cheval Blanc 2009 Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé, Bordeaux En Primeur, Case of 6 Château Cheval Blanc 2009 Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé, Bordeaux En Primeur, Case of 6 £4200.00
A great success: the 2009 has more Merlot than usual due to a couple of parcels of the Cabernet Franc suffering slightly from heat stress during the growing season. This is a very rich Cheval Blanc, with a delicious density of pure plum fruit and attractive savoury tobacco leaf notes. Huge concentration and great balance of acidity. Long, elegant and pure on the palate, with no traces of over-ripeness. Tight now, this needs time. Drink 2018 to 2040. Technical information: 58% Merlot; 42% Cabernet Franc 13.5% abv This wine is historically very sought after and is offered on a strictly first come, first served basis with a maximum of 1 case of 6 bottles per household - we reserve the right to cancel orders for more than 1 case in the interests of fairness to our customers. The most restrained and reticent of the First Growths during the En Primeur tastings. Great perfume with classic aromas of cedar, leafy blackcurrant and oak spice. This has great concentration and ripeness at its heart (they achieved their highest ever natural alcohol levels of 14.3% in 2009), but is cloaked in a huge depth of tannin at the moment. Drink 2025 to 2045. On a par with 2005 and may have even greater potential. Technical information: 46% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Cabernet Franc 14% abv Very limited availability. Château Mouton-Rothschild 2009 Pauillac Premier Grand Cru Classé, Bordeaux En Primeur, Case of 6 Château Mouton-Rothschild 2009 Pauillac Premier Grand Cru Classé, Bordeaux En Primeur, Case of 6 £3750.00
A fabulous vintage for Mouton, which sees the highest percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend since the 1963. A lovely, complex nose of violets, redcurrant, blackcurrant, cedar and leather. Broad and expansive on the palate, with rich, thick black fruit balanced by crunchy red berry flavours and a seam of cranberry acidity. Through careful harvesting and blending they have clearly managed to capitalise upon the excellent vintage conditions of 2009 and delivered a beautifully balanced wine, with controlled ripeness and great freshness of fruit. Drink from 2020 to 2040. Technical information: 88% Cabernet Sauvignon; 12% Merlot 13% abv This wine is historically very sought after and is offered on a strictly first come, first served basis with a maximum of 1 case of 6 bottles per household - we reserve the right to cancel orders for more than 1 case in the interests of fairness to our customers. Château d’Yquem 2009 Sauternes, Premier Cru Classé Supérieur, Bordeaux En Primeur, Case of 6 Château d’Yquem 2009 Sauternes, Premier Cru Classé Supérieur, Bordeaux En Primeur, Case of 6 £3000.00
A wine of huge richness and purity, this is clearly the wine of the vintage from Sauternes and one of the finest ever made on this renowned estate. The harvest was brought in over four tries from early September to the 19th October. Excellent noble rot developed on perfectly ripe grapes, providing perfect raw materials for top quality Sauternes. This is an opulent and beautifully elegant wine, which seems effortlessly rich. Intense flavours of lime-meringue cream and lemon barley sugar wash across a palate, which is hugely sweet but still fresh and bright. Very slightly lower acid and more sweetness than the benchmark 2001. Drink from 2018 to 2060. Technical information: Residual Sugar: 155 grams per litre 14% This wine is historically very sought after and is offered on a strictly first come, first served basis with a maximum of 2 cases of 6 bottles per household - we reserve the right to cancel orders for more than 2 cases in the interests of fairness to our customers. 2009 Château Palmer, 3ème Cru Classé, Margaux, En Primeur, 2009 Château Palmer, 3ème Cru Classé, Margaux, En Primeur, £1627.52
For the first time, this has marginally more Merlot (52%) than Cabernet (41%) with a slice of Petit Verdot (7%) thrown in to add its own magic. Intense purple/black fruit, with super-ripe tannins and velvet texture. Serious concentration of flavours with maybe more plum than black cherries/cassis, but at this stage (29th March 2010), the overriding impression was of a four-square classic which will be a revelation in twenty years time. A joy to taste and experience. Drink from 2020 ? 2035.

Bodegas Chivite, Gran Feudo 2005 Reserva Especial, Navarra, Spain Bodegas Chivite, Gran Feudo 2005 Reserva Especial, Navarra, Spain £11.39
A delicious red blend with ripe, soft fruit and a touch of spice. An exclusive blend of Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot created by Waitrose wine buyer Nick Room in partnership with company president Fernando Chivite. Founded in 1647, Bodegas Chivite is one of the oldest wine producing dynasties in Spain. The wine was matured in oak barrels for 18 months to add cedarwood and gentle vanilla notes to the dark blackberry and plum fruit flavours.
Walter Massa, Sentieri Barbera 2008/09 Colli Tortonesi DOC, Piedmont, Italy Walter Massa, Sentieri Barbera 2008/09 Colli Tortonesi DOC, Piedmont, Italy £11.39
A powerful, sumptuous and strong Italian red. Walter Massa is the revolutionary of the Tortonesi hills, rescuing indigenous varieties from oblivion and tirelessly striving to give his ‘terra’ a voice through his wines. His baritone of a Barbera, the sappy ‘Sentieri’, sings of sweet plums and sour cherries, ending on a herbal high. We recommend: “Rich, deep and vibrant red in the glass, the 2006 has a powerful, pronounced nose - warm yet herbal, with intense ripe black cherries and creamy oak. In the mouth, it is very harmonious with a real richness and smoothness. Hints of white pepper overlay the dark fruit, while the firm but well integrated tannins provide a satisfying structure, making this a good match for game or rich casseroles. A refreshing lick of acidity on the finish, with notes of smoke and leather, makes this a truly interesting and very satisfying wine.” Alex Murray, Manager, Waitrose Wine Direct

HUGEL ET FILS - Classic Gentil 2007 75cl Bottle HUGEL ET FILS - Classic Gentil 2007 75cl Bottle £9.52
Youthful pale green in colour, very brilliant, it has a nice clean, open bouquet, elegant and fresh, perfumed with aromas of spring blossom, jasmine, white rose, green apple and white peach. Fresh and dry on the palate, it is crisp and irresistibly easy to enjoy, thanks to a refreshing and agreeably aromatic finish. A wine to drink now or within 2 years, at 8C, with all sea or river fish : smoked, marinated, poached, steamed, grilled or in sauce, with shellfish, and also on its own. It would go well with Indonesian and Asian cuisines. In Alsace, the 2007 vintage was full of surprises, but pleasant surprises. For those who love elegant, pure, well balanced wines, 2007 was a benchmark vintage. Having enjoyed the longest period of maturation for the past 25 years, the grapes were perfectly ripe and healthy. On the Schoenenbourg, Hugel et Fils best Riesling vineyards were harvested at an average ripeness of 13.8% potential, while on the Sporen, Gewurztraminer Vendange Tardive easily reached 17.8%. In Alsace, the amount of VT and SGN wines produced provides an excellent indication of the overall quality of any year, and so 2007 has all the makings of a great Alsace vintage. Classic 'Hugel' wines are made exclusively from grapes purchased from winegrowers under long-term contract, in a dozen of the most favoured localities around Riquewihr. This wine revives an ancient Alsace tradition that wines assembled from noble grape varieties were called 'Gentil'. Gentil 'Hugel' allies the suave, spicy flavour of Gewurztraminer, the body of Pinot Gris, the finesse of Riesling, the grapiness of Muscat and the refreshing character of Sylvaner. The grapes are taken in small tubs to the presses, which are filled by gravity, without any pumping or other mechanical intervention. After pressing, the must is decanted for a few hours, then fermented in temperature-controlled barrels or vats (at 18 to 24C). The wine is racked just once, before natural clarification during the course of the winter. The following spring, the wine is lightly filtered just before bottling, and the bottles are then aged in our cellars until released for sale. The whole production of this wine is closed with DIAM the cork without the risk of cork taint. Grape: Gewurztraminer, Muscat, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Sylvaner.
